The necessary stages of door installation

Posted on 11th March 2019

There are many benefits to updating the doors in your home, from decreasing the cost of your energy bills to adding value to your property or simply giving your home a stylish update. Getting a door installed is a demanding job and requires a considerable amount of expertise. So the chances are if you don’t have the time or the DIY skills, you’ve decided to take the plunge and book an installation for your new doors, or you are planning to do so. Here are some handy pointers and tips for what to expect.

What you need to consider:

When you’ve decided that you are going to get a door installed, it’s important that you know what you’re looking for. Getting it installed isn’t as straightforward as just attaching the door to the doorway. There are many intricate factors to take into consideration, such as having the exact measurements so that the door fits in a way that keeps the room insulated but also has enough clearance to stop it from scraping the floor. Although this seems obvious, make sure you go with a professional who is going to get you value for money. This doesn’t necessarily mean going for the cheapest option as this usually ends up costing you more money in the long run. Make sure you choose a professional joiner who is experienced and qualified and is also able to give you start to finish service.

How to decide what type of door:

Because both interior and exterior doors are especially visible, for many people they require a significant amount of thought and attention when it comes to buying new ones. The right door will stand the test of time and if you invest wisely have significant longevity for daily usage, adding a sense of character to the overall interior design of your home.

Both interior and exterior doors come in a variety of styles and materials and there is a wide range of options available for you to choose from. Interior doors come in two basic forms: flush and panel. A flush style door is pretty nondescript and typically tends to blend seamlessly with most homes due to its versatile appearance (unless you have a particularly traditional home or a period property). A panel style door is made from a basic frame of flat or raised panels that come in either wood or glass. They’re more expensive than flush doors but an effective alternative is medium level density fibreboard doors (MDF). Another advantage is that MDF doors come already primed and ready to be painted.

In terms of exterior doors, Composite doors are the most popular option that comes in a variety of forms and impersonate the look of real wood and also require limited maintenance. Rather than using timber which often swells and bows, composite doors are made from a mixture of materials. Rockdoor composite doors use a high density core which is 60% stronger than standard composite doors in all of their front doors, back doors, french doors and stable doors.

How long installation will take and how to prepare:

The length of time an installation will take, completely depends on the type of job and how many doors you’re having installed. You also have to take into consideration the time it takes to set up and clean up afterwards. Most often, one door will take one day to install. If you’re lucky enough to have a driveway, it’s a good idea to leave it clear so the van carrying your new doors can get as close as possible to your house. It’s also worth considering moving any furniture that may be an obstruction getting the door in so the installers have got a clear access point. In most cases the installers will lay down furniture protection to shield your possessions from any dust or dirt, but it would certainly be worth querying this beforehand.
